Man Tragically Killed in Chula Vista Bicycle Accident

CHULA VISTA --Bicycle grip.jpg According to 10 News, a 77-year-old man struck a bicyclist with his car just after 8:30 a.m. Thursday. The tragic Chula Vista incident happened on Fourth Avenue when the driver was exiting a parking lot at Rice Elementary. The bicyclist, whose name is being withheld, was taken to a local hospital, where died about an hour later from his injuries. Lt. Eric Thunberg indicated that it is not clear if the driver was an employee at the school, however, he reported that the bicyclist apparently had the right of way at the time of the collision.

Cyclist Struck by Car in Sorrento Valley

Sorrento Valley Blvd - San Diego.pngSAN DIEGO - A bicyclist sustained major injuries after he was struck by a car in Sorrento Valley Thursday afternoon. According to the San Diego Union Tribune, a Toyota sedan apparently swerved to the right and then struck the bicyclist at about 1:05 p.m. on Sorrento Valley Boulevard, just east of Whispering Heights Lane. The car eventually came to complete stop after it traveled across the sidewalk and struck a tree.

Following the accident, firefighters and paramedics pulled the cyclist beneath the vehicle after he was pinned underneath for about 10 minutes. The mid-40s bicyclist, who witnesses at the scene stated was bleeding heavily, was transported to a hospital for further treatment. The driver of the sedan - a 75-year-old woman - was also taken to a hospital for treatment, however, the condition or the extent of the driver's injuries was not released.

Cause of the Bicycle Accident in Sorrento Valley

Information obtained through the San Diego Union Tribune does not clearly indicate what caused the driver of the Toyota to swerve and hit the bicyclist. Authorities investigating this January 19th collision will look to determine whether speed, distracted driving, vehicle malfunctions, or negligent driving played a role in this terrible accident.
